This issue of the rheumatism review marks a transition from the previous editions that have appeared at intervals during the past 20 years in the ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. The tremendous increase in recent years in the number of articles in the English literature dealing with the fundamental and clinical aspects of the connective tissue diseases makes it impractical to encompass all such material in a single comprehensive review. The American Rheumatism Association (ARA), with the assistance of the editors of the ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE, will continue to prepare at intervals of approximately two years a critical analysis
