This is a review of the medical treatment of arrhythmias that may be treated by electronic means. The role of countershock in the treatment of arrhythmias is not completely defined to everyone's satisfaction. Hopefully this panel will make some small contribution in defining the place of medical treatment and countershock.
After diagnosis of the arrhythmia is made the first question to be answered is "Is any treatment necessary?" Criteria involved in making this decision will be discussed.
If treatment is indicated the indications for, and nature of, medical treatment will be considered. The various general measures available will be outlined.
