White Swiss mice pretreated with 3.0 ml of CaCl2 (16 mEq/liter) and MgCl2 (8 mEq/liter) in 0.9% saline respond to bovine parathyroid extract by a twofold or greater increase in urinary milliequivalent phosphorus/milliequivalent calcium in 4 hours, which follows a linear dose-response up to 1 to 2 USP units per mouse. Human serum, 0.1 ml, usually induces some increase in phosphorus/calcium excretion by mise, which we believe represents circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH), since (1) A fourfold increase in activity has been demonstrated in canine thyroid-parathyroid venous plasma compared to simultaneously sampled peripheral plasma. Thyroxin is inert. (2) Calcium gluconate infusions
