The pyrogens, or endotoxins, of gram-negative bacteria are large molecules (molecular weight approximately 200,000) containing three major components: lipids, proteins (or peptides), and polysaccharides. This pyrogenic complex can be extracted from the bacterial cell wall, where it acts as surface A antigen and permits serologic classification of enteric bacteria.
