To support clinically patients with cardiovascular diseases in their efforts to stop smoking, a series of studies was undertaken at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, in November, 1955. An astonishingly large group of smokers with miscellaneous symptoms brought about by their smoking habits applied for the treatment. Therefore, a special outpatient clinic was started in February of 1956.
Results of systematic testing focused the program more on the mind than on the soma. Smoking appeared to be mostly psychological addiction. Needed was a treatment that was reliable, capable of being adapted to the particular needs of the individual patient,
