This scholarly account of the cases of 87 patients with proven ventricular septal defects is the author's doctoral dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Copenhagen in 1963. These patients were selected from 1,678 patients with congenital heart disease who underwent right heart catheterization in the University Hospital, Copenhagen, between 1947 and 1960.
The thesis begins with a pertinent, brief history of the ventricular septal defect and ends with a succinct review of the natural history of the defect. In the intervening chapters, the author presents in great detail the hemodynamic findings of his patients, at
