O sleep! it is a gentle thing,
Beloved from pole to pole.
—Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Sleep is an experience so universal that it becomes notable only by its absence. When sleep is denied, most human beings share the sentiment of the Ancient Mariner (although usually under circumstances less harrowing). Who does not know the painful yearning of the fatigued mind and body for sleep? Who does not know the agony of being awakened from a sleep as yet unfinished or of having to stay awake when exhaustion demands sleep—an experience all too familiar to most physicians?
