Dr. Nesselrod's book is mainly about the surgical management of common anorectal disorders and emphasizes his concept that the primary etiologic factor common to many of these is infection. Internists might well be interested in the 21 good pages on proctoscopy with excellent illustrations including eight in color. Of particular interest is the discussion of endoscopy through intestinal stomas—a neglected but important procedure.
One wonders why the author bothered to introduce the subject "Normal Physiology of the Colon" to give it only half a page. Although there is another page on "Physiology of Defecation," neither discussion offers any recent information.
