From studies of the effect of physical forces on vascular structure, we have induced the formation of endothelial papilliferous growths. In 16 dogs, the right or left atrial appendage was invaginated to form an epicardial sheath. A ball of silastic, plastice, or glass was placed into the epicardial sheath and held in place by suture, thereby introducing an endocardium-lined mass into the atrium. Removal of the mass 10 days to 7 months after surgery revealed cauliflower-like growths consisting of hyperplastic endocardium and hypertrophic subendocardial stroma.
