Intracavitary phonocardiography has proved valuable in the diagnosis of lesions of the right heart. By the retrograde approach, phonocardiographic evaluation of aortic outflow lesions has been possible. At present, lesions of the mitral valve and left atrium have not been accessible to this type of evaluation. By simple modifications of the standard transseptal catheter technique, we have obtained intracardiac phonocardiograms from both the left atrium and left ventricle with simultaneous pressure recordings.
The technique was initially used to study ten patients with mitral stenosis. The diastolic murmur was present in the left ventricle below the mitral valve. Its duration could
