Radioactive iodine-tagged lipids have been used extensively in the quantitative estimation and the differential diagnosis of steatorrhea. The usefulness of such studies has been evaluated in a large number of cases involving various conditions that can produce steatorrhea. When compared with the chemical analysis of stools for fat, the radioisotope method was more effective in detecting moderate or severe steatorrhea but less effective in indicating mild steatorrhea. The I131-labeled oleic acid test was combined with chemical analysis of stools for fat in an attempt to differentiate pancreatogenic steatorrhea from that of intestinal origin.
