While it may or may not still be true that to know syphilis is to know medicine, it seems to this reviewer (who admits to a certain bias) that a knowledge of the history of the gout can serve well as an introduction to the history of medicine. This belief is supported by Dr. Copeman's delightful little book on the Morbus Dominorum, which traces the history of the gout from its appearance in the Hippocratic writings through recent times.
