The American College of Chest Physicians sponsors several postgraduate courses each year. Publication of selected lectures was begun in 1963, and Volume 2 of Advances in Cardiopulmonary Diseases is the current edition.
The first two papers deal with diagnosis in chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These papers exemplify problems of communication about this complex group of diseases. In neither is critical anatomical information presented to support decisions allocating a given sign, symptom, or radiologic finding to a specific diagnostic category.
