Though this collection of articles edited by Charles William Wahl is titled New Dimensions in Psychosomatic Medicine, it contains little that is truly "new." This book emphasizes the consideration of the patient as a whole, not as a fragmented set of symptoms arbitrarily divided into the either/or categories of functional and organic. This keynote is sounded by Franz Alexander's lead article "The Development of Psychosomatic Medicine." Through careful historical development Alexander shows how "psychosomatic" interests have waxed and waned between romanticism and pseudo objectivity. He points out that more recently the "first phase of speculation" is being documented and clarified
