Physiologic pulmonary changes associated with smoking are important from many points of view. Previously studies evaluating lung function and exercise oxygen dynamics have been performed in smokers (1-19). Many of these studies have been concerned with the acute changes after the smoking of one or two cigarettes. We recently made measurements of lung volurnes, ventilatory function, and some cardiopulmonary responses to exercise in a group of nonsmokers and found statistically significant differences between the two groups (19).
