In the United States every year about 40,000 persons are killed by automobiles, and over a million are injured. Appalling as these statistics are, no one would suggest that auto travel should be abandoned, but we should drive more carefully.
As new and more potent drugs are added to the medical armamentarium, the number of toxic effects from them also may appear so appalling that some are suggesting that all such agents, one by one, be abandoned for the good of mankind.
