One hundred patients with dominant mitral stenosis were treated surgically between 1950 and 1953. Two patients have been lost to follow-up. Seventeen patients were classified as Group IV (New York Heart Association), 57 patients were Group III, 23 patients Group II, and 3 patients Group I. The surgical mortality was 9%. Eighty-one of the patients had pre-operative cardiac catheterization, 31 patients were recatheterized 6 to 8 weeks after surgery, and 30 have been restudied 10 years later. Forty-five patients are living. There has been a stable mortality rate of about 4%/year after a period of improvement lasting about 3 years
