The synthesis in our laboratory of the polypeptide hormones, oxytocin and the vasopressins, made it possible to establish unequivocally that the principal uterine-contracting hormone of the posterior pituitary gland is also the principal milk-ejectig hormone. The decisive experiments were carried out with synthetic oxytocin in human patients in collaboration with Prof. R. Gordon Douglas and associates in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. These combined efforts also led to the transbuccal administration of oxytocin. Synthetic arginine-vasopressin also possesses intrinsic milk-ejecting activity in the human but is about one fifth as potent as oxytocin.
