Hyperglycemia has been reported after the administration of thiazide drugs to patients. After a carbohydrate load, we have been able to demonstrate that blood sugar levels are higher when patients or animals are receiving chlorothiazide than when they are not taking the drug. Additional studies in vitro on adipose tissue show that fat from rats given chlorothiazide has a decreased rate of utilization of glucose compared with that from control animals. Similarly adding chlorothiazide to the incubating medium reduces the glucose disappearance rate caused by fat tissue of normal rats.
