What might be called the golden age of the thyroid was initiated 50 years ago when new developments flowed from all directions. Experiments on the prevention of simple goiter with iodine were made then, thyroxine was isolated from the thyroid gland, metamorphosis in tadpoles was shown to be mediated by the gland, and some hint of a controlling influence from the pituitary was beginning to be envisioned. Within 15 years the structure of thyroxine was elucidated, iodine had been reintroduced in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, and goiter from feeding cabbage had been described.
