The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate the three roles fulfilled by intraluminal manometric esophageal studies in the evaluation of patients with small sliding hiatal hernia. Pressures are measured under resting conditions and after swallowing at each 0.5-cm segment of the esophagus and its sphincters by a miniature balloon and two open-tip polyethylene tubes separated by 5 cm connected to pressure transducers and recorded photokymographically.
