Maximal volume and bicarbonate secretion by the pancreas in ten healthy individuals receiving 1, 2, 3, and 4 units of secretin (Vitrum®)/kg body weight at different times occurred in most instances at the 2 unit dose. The diagnostic reliability of this augmented dose of secretin was subsequently compared with an augmented dose of pancreozymin (Hanscom and Littman, 1963) and a test meal (Lundh, 1962) in 79 persons. The latter comprised healthy volunteers, patients with nonpancreatic disease, and those with chronic pancreatitis or carcinoma of the pancreas confirmed by other methods, all of whom underwent the three tests in sequence.
