Perhaps the novice will find this monograph attractive because it does present a large body of conventional information in a fairly logical form and because it has an extensive (although outdated) bibliography. But a close examination shows the style to be rough and the discussion often ambiguous and frequently inadequate. Such concepts as tension-time index, hemodynamic functions of the atrium, and the LaPlace relationship have been omitted entirely from the considerations of the heart pump. The discussion of the normal and abnormal pulmonary circulation does not include the information deduced from the elegant studies of zonal circulation using isotopes of
