Accurate interpretation of changes in retinal vessels is most firmly based on knowing the structural basis of the changes observed. The consequences of ignorance here are too often seen in the student's failure to distinguish between changes due to hypertension itself and those due to arteriolosclerosis.
Dr. Seitz' monograph will clear up any confusion of the student (young or old) as to the cause, and hence meaning, of such ophthalmoscopic findings as crossing "defects" and "silver-wire" arterioles. His interpretations of vessel appearances are derived from postmortem histologic studies of retinas observed while the patients were still living. His book illustrates
