The discovery of Gudernatsch (1) that feeding of thyroid to tadpoles caused their metamorphosis into frogs was the headline news in the thyroid field when the American College of Physicians was founded in 1915. This was a striking demonstration of the potentiality of the hormone and of the complexity of its action; no longer could it be regarded as a substance that merely speeded the rate of metabolism. The phenomenon also provided a simple test for the active principle that was soon put to good use in physiological studies and in work on the purification of thyroid extracts.
