The intense excitement of the early 1950's, when clinical research programs dealing with the effects of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cortisone on patients were expanding and multiplying rapidly, will never be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to have participated. It is difficult to realize that the knowledge and information obtained from the many studies reported, when organized into chapters and paragraphs, can transmit so little of the enthusiasm that attended the original reports, made less than 15 years ago.
After reading the preface, my first reaction to this book was modified. It became apparent to me that no
