This is an outstanding work, an excellent reference not only for the physician immediately responsible for the management of complicated pregnancies but also for the consultant. The direction of modern obstetrics is clearly evident in that considerably greater awareness of basic mechanisms and mutual understanding of the interactions between gestation and disease processes is expected of the obstetrician and the consultant alike. Unfortunately, in this specific area, existing deficiences on the part of both groups are far from generally acknowledged.
