The intention of the author, as indicated in the prefaces to the first and second editions of this work, is to set forth important clinical criteria for the accurate diagnosis of surgical conditions. To do so in a concise fashion he accepts the necessity of some dogmatism and oversimplification. His approach is basically a physiologic one and, aided by excellent drawings and many mnemonic schemes, he conveys effectively much pertinent information about a wide variety of conditions in surprisingly little space.
