Glucagon has certain actions that resemble those of epinephrine. This similarity led us to study the chronotropic action of glucagon in 26 dogs, utilizing perfusion of the sinus node through its own artery with the intact heart in situ. Glucagon concentrations ranging from 1 X 1O-5 to 100 µg/ml were employed.
Glucagon below concentration of 10-1 µg/ml had had no significant effect on heart rate. From 10-1 µg/ml each successively greater concentration elicited more sinus tachycardia. Maximal acceleration appeared within 1 or 2 min after injection. Peak acceleration was 40 to 70% above control rate, and maximal duration was 45
