During the past 10 years we have used an externally delivered alpha-particle or proton beam to treat several hundred patients suffering from various disorders, including 38 patients with acromegaly and 7 patients with Cushing's disease. The high-energy, heavy-particle beam with its advantageous properties of great penetration, little scatter, greater biological effectiveness per unit of ionization in tissue, Bragg peak effect, relative insensitivity to oxygen concentration, and lack of a recovery factor (its effect being predominantly irreversible) makes possible the delivery of large amounts of energy to localized areas within the body without damage to surrounding tissue. Therefore we are able
