Advance in laboratory method has often been the prelude to advance in concept. This has been true in study of the parathyroids and the diseases that result from their dysfunction. The development of the Clark-Collip method for determination of serum calcium, a method technically demanding but susceptible to precise use, was probably a vital condition for the vast and rewarding excursions of Albright through the parathyroid disorders. The isolation of the parathyroid hormone (hypercalcemic) through the efforts of Aurbach and Rasmussen barely 6 years ago was a necessary condition for the explosion of effort reflected in the bulk of papers
