A primary responsibility of the clinical specialist is a recounting of his extensive experience for evaluation by his colleagues. The authors of this monograph, who have had such experience in treating youngsters with diabetes mellitus, have lucidly documented their diagnostic and therapeutic approach to these patients. While emergent problems as acidosis and hypoglycemia are emphasized, the psychological aspects of the adolescent diabetic and the management of infants of diabetic mothers are also considered. A concise appendix includes reference for both nurse and physician regarding routine care, methods of instructing parents of diabetic children, and a suggested schedule of fluid therapy.
