While hypoxia and hypercapnia usually cause a decrease in cerebral vascular resistance, cerebral oxygen consumption is little changed except under extreme conditions. The effect of these changes on cerebral PO2 is uncertain because of technical difficulties with the measurement of tissue PO2 and because there are apparently extracellular and intracellular regional differences in PO2. Changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) PO2 must be due to changes in the PO2 of that part of the system with which CSF is in equilibrium or due to equilibration with a different part of the system under the altered conditions.
