Texts reporting symposia devoted to the general subject of shock have been appearing once annually for the last half dozen years. By contrast there was a quarter century hiatus between the two most significant earlier treatises on the subject in the English language, Cannon's Traumatic Shock and Wiggers' Physiology of Shock. The higher frequency of current reporting reflects not only the greater inclination of contemporaries to publish and the vast increase in the number of investigators working in the field but also the rate at which new information and changing concepts are evolving in the area of shock.
