In 1940, H. Gideon Wells wrote a delightful article, published in JAMA, entitled "Adipose Tissue, A Neglected Subject." Twenty-five years later some 90 of the world's top specialists on the subject have collaborated in assembling current knowledge relating to adipose tissue. The result is this handbook consisting of 69 rather brief and for the most part very readable chapters, divided into five general sections: general and comparative physiology of adipose tissue; microscopic and molecular anatomy; enzyme pathways; mechanisms of control; and finally, integrated physiology of adipose tissue in the whole organism.
