The tissue wasting that accompanies chronic congestive heart failure is a phenomenon familiar to all clinicians, though it is frequently masked by increase in total body weight as a result of fluid accumulation. The factors that contribute to this net negative nutritional balance have been the subject of much published investigation. These authors have reviewed this literature extensively and present a scholarly analysis of their findings. Inasmuch as nutritional status is a steady state resultant of intake, utilization, and loss of nutrients, the book's organization, which follows these lines, is quite efficient.
