Ciba symposia are exciting and informative events for the lucky participants; the published proceedings are eagerly awaited guideposts for the rest of the scientific community. Complement is no exception: the investigative explosion of this area which has been quiescent for so many years is spectacular.
The symposium is an up-to-date and comprehensive compendium of facts and opinion. It cannot be read without effort. J. H. Humphrey —a superb moderator—suggests hopefully (with tongue in cheek, I suspect) that the tower of Babel is beginning to yield mutual understanding, but the uninitiated reader will find it difficult to follow the kinetic sequence
