It is now well known that in normal erect subjects pulmonary blood flow is greater in the dependent portions of the lungs than at the apices and that this pattern may be reversed in severe mitral stenosis. External scintillation scanning of intravenously administered 131I-labeled macroaggregates of human serum albumin was employed to evaluate the distribution of pulmonary arterial blood flow in 10 normal subjects and in 30 patients with mitral valve disease.
