A well-trained psychiatrist can evaluate the effect of the patient's earlier history on his response to recent stress and thus help to clarify the medical diagnosis. The pattern of the patient's characteristic psychological defenses emerges during the psychiatrist's interview and thus provides the basis for advice to the internist about treatment.
