We have evaluated renal function and serum electrolytes in 13 patients before and immediately after surgical exploration of the neck for removal of parathyroid tumors. There were nine females and four males (ages 15 to 67 years). Nine had histories of renal stone, five had genitourinary infection, and four complained of polyuria. Serum calcium levels were 10.3 to 13.5 mg/100 ml preoperatively (normal 8.9 to 10.1); these were normal in eight patients within 2 hours after operation and in all within 24 hours. Preoperatively, glomerular filtration inulin clearance (CIn) values were reduced in seven patients, and effective renal plasma flow
