"Uneven" may be the most appropriate adjective to describe this monograph authored by 16 anesthesiologists, 2 surgeons, and a pharmacologist. Its subject, anesthesia for the patient in shock, is covered by means of 11 essays on various aspects of the problem and a critique by the editor as the twelfth chapter. The wide variation in opinion and practice included in the first 11 chapters is reviewed and consolidated to some extent by the critique, which offers better organization and a more consistent presentation than most of the rest of the book.
