As the editors state in the preface, ". . . we have made no attempt to produce a work of uniformity to be read in sequence from beginning to end. . . ." The volume is a series of essays by 21 authors. Most of the contributions are well done. The bibliographies are selective but adequate and usually current. There are occasional inconsistencies between references in the text and the bibliography, for example, p. 228, "Orhoff, et al (1958)." Orloff is spelled incorrectly. The year is wrong in the bibliography (1956).
