When I was a student, I was as eager as any of my classmates to get in on any give-away of those didactic and colorful brochures passed out by drug houses. These glossy-paper pamphlets showed blood smears from malaria or sulfa crystals in urine or the suction treatment of pneumothorax or great men of medicine posed in the great moments of their lives—in four-color printing that was as hard a sell of concept as the brochure itself was soft-sell as an ad.
