Virtually all of the clinical, chemical, and radiological methods described in Nordin and Smith's handbook can be found elsewhere but chiefly scattered through the journal literature. Therefore, the least service that they have done for physicians interested in renal stone, intestinal malabsorption, the parathyroids, and metabolic bone disease is their bringing together this compilation. About three fifths of the book describes principles, protocols, and interpretations of diagnostic methods, and the remainder sets forth procedures for chemical analyses. Some of the "diagnostic" procedures—such as determination of plasma citrate—are of interest only to clinical investigators and cannot be put to use in
