The objectives of the author are to stimulate interest in medical history and provide an opportunity to find a medical "hero." In meeting these goals a fairly complete sketch of the "villain," Rocky Mountain spotted fever, is presented. The bibliography is reasonably complete and provides those readers who desire greater detail an opportunity to find it. The "hero" is clearly Dr. Henry T. Ricketts. His brief but unusual career should provoke even the most casual reader to review his own sense of values and professional goals.
