It has been my privilege to review this essay while studying immunotolerance to simple chemicals in my own laboratory.
The monograph examines hypersensitivity to simple chemicals, describes the experimental induction of nonresponsiveness, and discusses hypotheses regarding its development.
The experimental section is complete and up to date. The authors make clear where additional work is needed but are rather hesitant in the analysis of the merits of what has been done. Most of the studies deal with nitrobenzenes, but the discussion includes proteins, polysaccharides, homografts, and heterografts.
The mechanism of immunotolerance invites speculations that are exciting but not always convincing.
