To the Editor: The following comments seem appropriate to "Fatal Anaphylaxis After Intramuscular Iron-Dextran," which appeared in the ANNALS 65: 745, 1966.
Kabat, Turino, Tarrow, and Maurer (1) reported that dextran was allergenic in man. Hehre and Sugg (2) showed that dextran formed specific precipitates with types II, XII, and XX antipneumococcal sera. It was shown in this laboratory (3-5) that specific type antipneumococcal rabbit serum sensitized sufficiently to mediate fatal anaphylaxis from 2.0 mg of dextran intravenously.
