Textbooks written by a single author (with perhaps one or two collaborators), thoroughly familiar with the subject, have the merit of a consistent point of view and thorough coverage. However, a single author may find it difficult to present a critical evaluation of a large and often controversial literature. This is particularly apparent where the subject is undergoing a rapid change and the literature proliferates ad infinitum.
