For many years every antibiotic-resistant bacterium was presumed to be a spontaneous mutant or the direct descendant of one. Recently, bacteria have been shown to be capable of transferring multiple antibiotic resistance to other bacteria, even bacteria of other species. This occurs during cell-to-cell contact by the direct transmission of cytoplasmic genetic determinants of antibiotic resistance called R factors. For the past year we have been investigating the significance of this phenomenon in a general hospital both by a continuing computer analysis of all antibiotic-resistance tests performed by the clinical microbiology laboratory and by experimental transfer of drug resistance.
