The increasing availability and utilization of diagnostic radiologic techniques in internal medicine make the proper evaluation of their hazards and limitations essential. This paper deals specifically with the changes in pulmonary function related to the performance of three diagnostic procedures: lymphangiography, bronchography, and pulmonary scanning with the use of radioactive iodinated serum albumin (RISA). Our data, obtained from patients who had undergone lymphangiography, indicate that there occurs almost universally a 25% fall in diffusion capacity without significant alteration of ventilatory function. These changes are due to oil embolization and are correlated with histologic changes occurring in humans.
